Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project Welcomes New Staff Attorney

TCRP welcomes new staff attorney Jed Untereker at our Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project office in El Paso. Jed takes the place of Chris Benoit, who has gone to Mexico City to do human rights work, after three years with us, doing terrific work in our Economic Justice Project.

Jed, coming to us from Chicago, has served as staff attorney and then Litigation Director for the Working Hands Legal Clinic and as Legal Content Manager for Illinois Legal Aid. He has been involved with immigrant worker centers.

Jed has litigated more than a hundred cases for low-wage, primarily immigrant workers, and, until joining us, served on the board of the Comunidad de Chicago y Derechos Laborales (Chicago Community and Workers’ Rights).

As Legal Content Manager for Illinois Legal Aid Online, Jed managed more than 2000 articles, videos, and forms in over 30 practice areas, as well as managing the interns and editors who assisted him.

Jed’s interested in using expanding technology to help legal aid organizations provide information and deliver services. His endeavors in this area involved work on creating an online interview, like Turbo Tax, to help workers and their advocates fill out and file wage claim forms on their own with the Illinois Department of Labor. He is also developing a video series in Spanish to present different immigration issues in an easy-to-understand way.

He has done legal work with Shearman and Sterling, LLP in New York and taught at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, UAE. His law degree (2006) is from DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, where he assisted with the Center for Justice in Capital Cases and the school’s Death Penalty Clinic

His undergraduate (Bachelor of Arts in Art History) is from Williams College, Williamstown, MA He has been in Chiapas, Mexico and studied six months in Madrid, Spain.

Jed is highly proficient in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish. His wife is an immigration attorney, who also does human rights work; and they have two young children.
