TCRP ANNOUNCES GRANT FROM HOLLYFIELD FOUNDATION
TO ASSIST PEOPLE WITH HIV THROUGH EDUCATION AND LITIGATION

The Texas Civil Rights Project has received a financial grant from the Hollyfield Foundation of Houston.

According to Jenna Kelly-Landes, TCRP Community Outreach Director, the purpose of the grant is to protect the rights of people who are HIV+, specifically those whose privacy rights are threatened by unlawful disclosure of their HIV status. Where privacy violations have occurred, TCRP would litigate, both for individual HIV+ clients and to bring about changes in policies, training, and procedures to avoid future unlawful disclosures, especially by medical or clinic personnel.

TCRP in recent years has filed four suits in different areas of Texas regarding unlawful disclosures of persons' HIV+ status. TCRP also has successfully litigated against two county jails that refused to provide HIV medication to pre-trial detainees, and settled a case in which a rural county's misdemeanor jail diversion program excluded an HIV+ individual and sent him to prison instead.

The Hollyfield Foundation in Houston fosters and protects individual rights and freedoms by supporting non-profit organizations that work to prevent discrimination, educate and secure equal rights for homosexual minorities and assist in health care issues for the community, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS education, care and treatment. http://www.hollyfield.org/about.htm

The Texas Civil Rights Project, a nonprofit foundation, promotes civil rights and economic and racial justice throughout Texas.
